What Is LCL Shipping?

LCL (Less than Container Load) is an ocean freight mode where your cargo shares container space with shipments from other importers. Instead of paying for an entire container, you only pay for the volume (in CBM) that your goods occupy. LCL is consolidated at a Container Freight Station (CFS) at the origin port and deconsolidated at a CFS at the destination port.

LCL shipping typically starts from as little as 1 CBM, making it the most accessible option for small and medium-sized importers who don't have enough volume to fill a container.

What Is FCL Shipping?

FCL (Full Container Load) means you rent an entire shipping container exclusively for your cargo. Whether your container is 60% full or 100% full, you pay the same flat rate for the container. Your goods are loaded at your supplier's factory (or a warehouse), sealed with your own seal, and the container is not opened until it reaches your designated delivery address.

Key concept: FCL pricing is per container (flat rate), while LCL pricing is per CBM (cubic meter). The break-even point where FCL becomes cheaper per CBM is typically around 8-10 CBM.

LCL vs FCL: Comprehensive Comparison

FactorLCL (Less than Container Load)FCL (Full Container Load)
PricingPer CBM β€” pay only for what you usePer container β€” flat rate regardless of fill level
Minimum volumeStarts at 1 CBM20ft container (approx. 28 CBM)
Transit timeLonger β€” requires consolidation and deconsolidation (+5-7 days)Faster β€” door-to-door with no consolidation stops
Risk of damageHigher β€” cargo is handled multiple times, shared spaceLower β€” container sealed at origin, not reopened until destination
Risk of delaysHigher β€” dependent on all shipments in the shared container being readyLower β€” your container moves when you're ready
Cost per CBM (1-8 CBM)Lower β€” LCL is the clear winner for small volumesHigher β€” paying for unused container space
Cost per CBM (10+ CBM)Higher β€” CFS charges, docs fee per CBM, higher per-unit costLower β€” fixed container cost spread over more volume
CustomsOne entry per shipment in a shared containerOne entry for the entire container
FlexibilityShip anytime β€” no need to wait until you fill a containerMust have enough volume; otherwise you're paying for air

The Break-Even Point: When Does FCL Become Cheaper?

The general rule of thumb in the freight industry is that FCL becomes more economical than LCL at approximately 8-10 CBM. However, this varies by route, season, and commodity. Here's a practical example from Shenzhen to Los Angeles:

VolumeLCL Cost (at $120/CBM)FCL Cost (20ft container)Winner
3 CBM$360$1,800LCL
6 CBM$720$1,800LCL
8 CBM$960$1,800LCL
10 CBM$1,200$1,800Near break-even
15 CBM$1,800$1,800FCL starts winning
25 CBM$3,000$1,800FCL
Once you reach 10+ CBM, FCL typically offers the same or lower freight cost β€” plus you get the benefits of speed, security, and no consolidation delays.

Container Sizes: 20ft vs 40ft vs 40HQ

If you're choosing FCL, the container size you select matters. Here are the standard options:

Container TypeInternal Dimensions (LΓ—WΓ—H)Volume (CBM)Max PayloadBest For
20ft GP5.90m Γ— 2.35m Γ— 2.39m~28 CBM~28,000 kgHeavy, dense cargo (machinery, tiles, metal parts)
40ft GP12.03m Γ— 2.35m Γ— 2.39m~58 CBM~26,500 kgStandard cargo β€” most common for consumer goods
40ft HQ (High Cube)12.03m Γ— 2.35m Γ— 2.69m~68 CBM~26,300 kgLight, voluminous cargo (furniture, packaging, insulation)

Most importers shipping consumer goods from China use the 40ft GP container. The 40ft HQ offers 10 extra CBM of volume at nearly the same ocean freight rate as a 40ft GP β€” making it excellent value for light but bulky cargo. The 20ft is ideal when weight is the constraint, not volume.

Real-World Transit Time Comparison

A typical ocean freight journey from Shenzhen to Los Angeles:

StageFCLLCL
Factory pickup to port1 day1 day
Loading and consolidation at CFSβ€”2-4 days
Export customs clearance1 day1-2 days
Ocean transit (Yantian β†’ LA/LB)12-14 days12-14 days
Deconsolidation at destination CFSβ€”2-3 days
Import customs clearance1-2 days1-2 days
Final delivery to warehouse1 day1-2 days

The additional 5-7 days for LCL comes primarily from the consolidation and deconsolidation process at both ends. If your supply chain is time-sensitive, this difference matters.
